Collagen, What Is It?

Collagen’s functions are quite different from those of globular proteins such as enzymes instead it is one of the long, fibrous structural proteins giving the cells structure from the outside via a component of the extracellular matrix that supports most tissues.

Collagen is directly responsible for skin strength and elasticity, its eventual degradation leads to wrinkles that come along with the aging process. It strengthens blood vessels and plays a role in tissue development. Collagen is also used in cosmetic and burn victims surgery.
